Even Discourse Goes Through Reorganization
by Josh Bailey
2025 wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t have company layoffs go into effect, even deep into December. The perfect time to do your layoffs when people are getting ready for the holidays and spending time with their families. Now, they are to be hit with added stressors of trying to look for another job in this garbage economy, along with millions of others that have dealt or are even still dealing with being laid off earlier in the year.
Discourse released a blog post explaining how they are making some organizational changes, adjusting cost structure for ensuring long-term sustainability. The corpo jargon rides thick within the post and has that feel of being looked over by the legal team and AI. This isn’t to say that it was, only in that the appearance of the piece has that scent.
Our Commitment to Your Ongoing Success with Discourse
Like many technology companies navigating the market conditions of the past year, we’re adjusting our cost structure to ensure long-term sustainability. We’re managing discretionary spending more carefully and focusing our resources on the areas that matter most to our customers.
As a part of that adjustment and our renewed product focus, we’re saying goodbye to some of our talented colleagues and team members. These decisions are difficult but necessary to align our expenses and our resources, and build a stronger foundation for Discourse.
I know that world of forums hasn’t been the most profitable one over the past decade or so, but it does come with caveats that large corporations do find them useful for internal boards, or to be part of the customer facing aspect of their business. For the rest of us, forums are still a great way for community building and information gathering.
Forums still serve a very useful purpose and could even be said that they are becoming more in use for those of us who are becoming disassociated with massive social networks. I, myself have been part of forums for over twenty years in some capacity or other. With the recent few weeks of building out this communities home by using Discourse and Next Binge TV under the NodeBB system.
The take away from this post, is that I hope that we see a more uptick of resurgence of forum usage. Discourse grows alongside this and is able to bring back those that might have been affected by this decision. The world needs more options and not ones that are locked down silos of corporate nonsense.
